Inaugural NHSC IP Conference Success

On 1st April 2009 the National Health Sciences Centre Ltd presented its ‘Inaugural ACT Health Industries IP Management and Commercialisation Conference’ at The Canberra Hospital, Garran, Canberra, ACT. Attendees came from all over Australia including Western Australia, Queensland, ACT, Victoria and South Australia as well as ACT. There was broad representation from Industry, Government departments involved in IP commercialisation, Departments of Health, Hospitals, Research Institutes, Universities and Service Providers.

Mr Mark Cormack, Chief Executive of ACT Health welcomed attendees and opened the Conference.

The theme for Session One was ‘The Why, When, Where and What of Intellectual Property’. The International Keynote speaker was Dr Christopher Ball from Imprimatur Capital Limited, London, England who presented on ‘Investing in and Taking Medical Inventions to Market’. Professsor Steven Boyages, Chief Executive of Sydney West Area Health Service presented ‘The Role of Innovation in Improving Patient Care at Sydney West Area Health Service.’ Professor Tim Hirst, CEO of ANU Connect Ventures covered ‘Biotech Investing – Risks, Rewards and the ACT.’

The Second Session was all about ‘IP Management and Commercialisation in Public Health’, and presentations included:

‘IP Commercialisation Achievements in Public Hospitals in NSW and QLD’ presented by Dr Deborah Kuchler (CEO, BioMed North Limited), Dr Russell Carrington (Deputy CEO, BioMed North Limited and Dr John Kapeleris (Deputy CEO, Australian Institute for Commercialisation).

Grand Rounds followed the above presentation and included ‘Case Presentations – Innovations from The Canberra Hospital Neonatology Department’ on

· Neonatal Intensive Care Ambulance Transport System

· Webcam in NICU

· Evacuation Cot Carry

‘Advances in Clinical Practice’ was presented by Associate Professor Marc Budge (Director of Geriatric Medicine, The Canberra Hospital and Professor of Geriatric Medicine, ANU Medical School) on ‘Home Telecare Monitoring Technology: The Journey from Development to Healthcare Integration’.

Session Three concentrated on IP Commercialisation Case Studies, and included:

Some IP Triumphs and Disasters - Dr Martin O’Brien, Principal, Spruson & Ferguson

This was followed by a number of short presentations from innovative ACT health sector companies who shared their IP commercialisation journeys with us.
